Abstract
The rapid development of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping how cities are governed and how they respond to the challenges of sustainability, urbanization, and resilience. This chapter, “Artificial Intelligence in Smart Cities: Success Stories for Resilient Futures”, explores the contribution of AI applications to building smarter, more adaptive, and more inclusive urban systems. By examining success stories from Singapore, New York, Barcelona, and Tokyo, it highlights concrete practices that demonstrate how AI strengthens resilience and improves the quality of life for citizens. The selected case studies show how AI has been used to address pressing urban issues: Singapore has pioneered intelligent traffic management and e-governance; New York has applied AI to environmental monitoring and urban safety; Barcelona has advanced citizen participation and digital inclusion; and Tokyo has focused on mobility solutions and disaster resilience. Together, these experiences reveal that AI is not only a tool for technological modernization but also a driver of socio-economic resilience. Methodologically, the chapter is based on a qualitative review of literature, policy frameworks, and documented urban practices. Comparative analysis of the four cities allows for the extraction of lessons and identification of common patterns that can inspire other municipalities worldwide. The findings emphasize the importance of investing in digital infrastructure, training for public administrators, and building partnerships across government, business, and communities. They also underline the need for ethical guidelines, robust data governance, and inclusive policies to avoid risks such as bias, privacy concerns, or digital exclusion. Ultimately, the chapter argues that the success of smart cities lies not only in adopting advanced technologies but in shaping resilient futures where innovation serves sustainability, inclusivity, and human well-being.
